Modern lifestyle easily breaks balance in your body system. It can cause pain, illness, weight gain, toxic accumulation, among other conditions. Lisa Kim designed this weight-loss program to help Hudavi Wellness guests achieve a better, healthier lifestyle the natural way!

The rationale for using acupuncture for weight control is based on the premise that weight gain and toxicity could be the result of disturbed energy flow to and from the control center of the brain which is called the hypothalamus. This program is designed to find the problem, resolve the root and prevent it from returning by changing the character of your body type. Every procedure will be tailored according to your individual body type based on the theories of Oriental Medicine.

The program lasts 8 weeks and, depending on the individual, requires once or twice a week visits. As part of the program, you will receive a Schedule Booklet to keep track of your progress and a personal supply of a specialty decoction & supplements. The weekly visits consist of acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, taking measurements and weight, as well as checking in to see how you’re feeling & progressing. One of our guests shared with us that she has already lost 8lbs in 4 weeks* with her twice weekly visits!

Lisa Kim’s Detoxification Program works in a similar way. By analyzing your current lifestyle and tailoring every treatment to your individual needs, Lisa Kim will guide you through an 8 week program designed to release built up toxins by incorporating acupuncture, cupping, acupressure, moxibustion and specialty decoction & supplements.

If you are interested in one or both of these unique programs, please give us a call to schedule your initial consultation today! 562-433-2177

What is so special about face masks?

Quite possibly the most overlooked and least used step in an effective skin care routine, the face mask holds a myriad of benefits just waiting for you to experience.

Most people view face masks as an optional, time consuming and sometimes messy step. However, I am here to show you a few different ways you can incorporate face masks as a weekly at home treatment to help prolong the results of your regular professional skin care treatments at Hudavi Wellness and how face masks can boost the efficacy of your daily skin care regime.

The first item I want to address is how we think about face masks. A lot of people I talk to about using a face mask on a regular basis typically say that it is too much work or too time consuming. And if you don’t understand the benefits of face masks and how to choose the right one for your skin type and personal convenience, you will continue in that same mindset. Instead of calling the product a face mask, begin referring to it as a face treatment. Using a face treatment once a week in between your professional treatments is an ideal way to encourage the progress of the results you want. Once you realize how amazing masks are for your skin you’ll never want to skip a weekly treatment!

The second item I am going to talk about is WHY you want to use a face treatment. These fantastic products are packed with highly active ingredients that are designed to deliver specific results depending on your needs and concerns. Are you experiencing break outs? Do you have brown spots or an uneven complexion? Are you noticing some fine lines and a loss of firmness? You are in luck! Face treatments can help with all of those issues. Because these ingredients are more active, certain face treatments you should only leave on for the time specified on the directions. Some treatments are created to stay on the skin overnight such as certain cream masks and the remaining product from sheet masks. Still other treatments can be used in the shower for those of us who have busy schedules.

Are you excited and ready to start your weekly face treatments? Below I have created a list to help guide you in choosing the right face treatment to incorporate into your skin care routine.

Masks for Dry/Mature/Normal Skin:

These skin types always need some extra hydration to help plump up skin cells and aid in better product absorption. Some of the best treatments to use are cream based and/or sheet masks. Most cream masks can be used as overnight treatments after a long day to help rejuvenate and refresh your skin while you sleep. The Bamboo Age Corrective & Firm Skin Acai treatments from Eminence Organics are two of my favorites to recommend for those concerned with anti-aging and both can be used as overnight treatments (they are also best sellers!). Another great option is a sheet mask! These treatments have made a popular comeback in recent skin care trends especially among the celebrity crowd with the likes of Adele, Chrissy Teigen and January Jones all posting selfiesheet-masks in their sheet masks. You can find these marvelous skin treatments at Sephora, Birchbox and Ulta Beauty. One of my favorite aspects of this treatment is massaging in the remaining serum after removing the actual sheet. Then I can curl up with my pillow and fall asleep while the power packed ingredients do their work.

Oily/Acne Prone/Hormonal Skin:

Most of us have had our fair share of break outs, however for some it’s a constant battle. Thankfully, there are plenty of terrific skin treatments to help heal, soothe and prevent those unwanted blemishes. For oily skin clay based masks are the best choice. Look for treatments that have kaolin clay or bentonite clay which are best for absorbing excess oils and detoxifying the pores. Most clay treatments need to be removed after about 10-15 minutes which gives adequate time for the clay to dry and absorb oils and impurities. Epmudfacialmaskicuren’s Chai Soy Mud Mask is an excellent choice to achieve a matte complexion.

If break outs are giving you the blues, face treatments with salicylic acid, probiotics or phytoestrogens (for hormonal issues) will turn your frown up upside down! One major problem with a lot of treatments for acne break outs is that they cause excessive dryness which can create imbalanced skin and can lead to more issues. Luckily, continued advances in skin care made by companies such as Eminence Organics and Visual Changes have resulted in face treatments that not only address active breakouts but also work to prevent future blemishes while healing and repairing the skin. The Clear Skin Probiotic treatment from Eminence Organics is a top notch product that will clear up your skin without causing any dryness or irritation. It can even be used as an overnight treatment! There are even sheet masks available for acne prone skin as well. Dr. Jart makes an amazing microfiber sheet mask that I’ve personally used and can testify that it really works.

Experiencing hormonal break outs? Don’t despair! While this is mostly an internal matter, there are still effective topical solutions that will give you clear skin. Phytoestrogens are the key ingredient to look for when choosing the best face treatment. Eminence Organics has developed an incredible skin care line that includes 2 different masks to address hormonal break outs, Eight Greens Phyto treatment comes in a regular or “hot” version depending on the results you want.

Combination/Sensitive Skin:

Combination skin is the most common skin type however most people don’t know how to best treat it. Thankfully, there are several great options! One way to combat combination skin is by having two different face treatments on hand to treat different concerns. Have an oily T-zone but dry cheeks? Use a clay treatment for the oily spots and a hydrating mineral treatment for the dry areas. If you are experiencing break outs on your cheeks and your T-zone is dull and/or has hyperpigmentation use a brightening treatment on the T-zone and a salicylic treatment on the cheeks. There are plenty of options to keep your skin looking beautiful.

Those with sensitive skin tend to shy away from skin treatments with potent ingredients, but it’s time to be daring! And by daring I mean seeking out skin treatments that have calming, soothing ingredients that gently hydrate, replenish and pamper your skin.man_with_a_facial_mask_0067-00983

Sheet masks like Manefit Beauty Planner Cucumber are great for calming down irritated skin and adding much needed hydration while the Calm Skin Arnica treatment from Eminence Organics addresses redness and helps boost the skin’s immune functions with their patented BioComplex antioxidant boost.

Dull/Hyperpigmented Skin:

Last, but certainly not least, I want to tell you about the wonderful skin treatments you can do weekly to brighten up and even out your complexion.

Do you prefer to use organic, naturally sourced products? Then Eminence Organics Bright Skin treatment is your new best friend! Formulated with a natural hydroquinone alternative, this overnight treatment will leave your skin brighter and more even after each use. Another excellent leave on treatment comes from Origins Mega-Bright Dark Spot Correcting Night treatment.brightskinmask

If you’re not afraid of a little scientific intervention, look for a skin treatment that contains hydroquinone. Other brightening skin treatments may contain exfoliating enzymes that dissolve away dead skin cells and reveal the new, fresh skin underneath.

My biggest piece of advice when using brightening treatments that specifically target hyperpigmentation is to make sure you are protecting your skin during the day with a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen is vital for all skin types, however when treating pigmentation issues the skin is more sensitive to the sun and without proper protection you could end up with darker spots than when you started.

I hope I was able to change your perception of face masks and stir up some excitement about your next weekly treatment! If you’re not sure what skin treatment is right for you, talk with one of our estheticians.

Yours in health,

Megan Walton, Esthetician

The Vampire Facelift

PRP BannerPRP stands for platelet rich plasma. Blood, in addition to red and white blood cells, contains platelets which are rich in growth factors. Growth factors promote normal healing by restoring the normal architecture and strength of the damaged tissue. In a platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection, the patient’s own blood is processed at high speeds, resulting in higher concentrations of the patient’s own growth and healing factors, which are then injected into the injured area or wrinkles promoting a more potent healing response.

PRP for Aesthetics is the perfect natural alternative or compliment to other aesthetic injectible procedures (i.e. Botox/Dermal Fillers) and can be easily incorporated into any type of medical or aesthetic practice. The upside to PRP is that it lasts longer because it is regrowing and healing your own tissue from the inside out, but for the same reason results are not immediate.  You will see a difference within three weeks and full difference by three months. One treatment can last up to two years, and sometimes a second treatment may be needed.

PRP for Orthopedics is highly recommended to replace risky and costly surgeries and offers other benefits that includes regrowing damaged cartilage and tendons to strengthen ligaments and joints to provide pain relief.

List of conditions Treated by PRP:

  • Acne
  • Scarring
  • Alopecia
  • Skin Rejuvenation & Tightening
  • Osteoarthritis of Knee, Shoulder, Hip & Spine

Herbs for Women: Natural Phytoestrogens

There are many herbs that provide vital benefits for our health and well being, yet as women we sometimes need specific support for our natural estrogen production. Whether your body creates too much estrogen or not enough, the phytoestrogens found in certain herbs can help regulate your overall estrogen levels.

What exactly are Phytoestrogens? Simply put, phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant compounds that have a similar chemical structure to estrogen produced naturally in women. Because of this similarity, once phytoestrogens are digested they can mimic our natural estrogen and provide balance for over active or under active estrogen production. Below is a list of different herbs that contain phytoestrogens along with numerous other health benefits.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Alfalfa is typically known for being a food supply to cattle & horses, however physicians have been using thisalfalfa plant for it’s medicinal purposes for over 1,500 years. In ancient Chinese medicines, alfalfa was used to treat digestive & kidney disorders. Found to be high in protein, calcium and other minerals, alfalfa also contains vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. The isoflavones found in alfalfa leaves are thought to be the source of it’s phytoestrogens.

Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)

This herb was used by Native Americans for gynecological disorders as well as sore throats, kidney issues and even depression. Currently, it is promoted on the health market to relieve symptoms of premenstrual tension, menopause and other gynecological problems. The roots of the plant are where the beneficial properties are found. Black Cohosh root

Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)

dong_quai_closeup

Traditionally used in Eastern medicine practices for women’s health, the use of Dong Quai in Western holistic treatments has increased throughout the years. Although more studies are needed, Dong Quai has been found to aid in relieving symptoms associated with PMS, like cramping, and menopause, such as hot flashes. Dong Quai may even contain anti-osteoporotic properties. This herb can be found in tablet, liquid and powder form.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

A plant native to Europe, St. John’s Wort is not only a beautiful flowering plant, but it has also been used for centuries because of its healing effects. In treating depression, several studies have shown that St. John’s Wort exhibits a similar efficacy to that of standard anti-depressants. This herb may also alleviate tension, anxiety and irritability due to hormonal changes resulting from menstruation and menopause. While St. John’s Wort has many benefits to offer, it is still strongly advised to consult your primary healthcare provider before use.

Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAVitex has a storied past as a traditional tonic used to restore balance to the hormonal and reproductive systems. Recent clinical studies have shown that the extract of the plant is effective in the management of PMS and cyclical breast pain. This herb has been widely used throughout Europe to treat various gynecological symptoms. Vitex may also help support the pituitary gland which affects the production of progesterone and could be the cause of reduced PMS symptoms.

Wild Yam Root (Dioscorea villosa)

wild yamMost of us enjoy consuming yams as part of our regular diet, however Wild Yam Root is not usually on the menu as it is not suitable for eating. Instead, it’s root and bulb are touted for their important health benefits. Once the root and bulb of the wild yam plant are converted by a laboratory into diosgenin, it can be made into estrogen and DHEA which the body can more easily absorb. Wild Yam Root can be found in tinctures, creams and oral supplements to help aid in estrogen replacement therapy. It has also been known to treat diverticulosis, gallbladder pain, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Love Your Heart!

Heart LogoFebruary is the month of LOVE. Everywhere you turn, red & pink hearts decorate windows, shops and pretty much everything else! With all these hearts around we should be easily reminded to take care of our own hearts, yet we rarely do. However, there is any easy and painless way to check your heart health by using Ultrasound Screening.

Ultrasound is a simple, radiation free, pain free treatment that looks at your heart to look for inflammation, your carotid arteries to look at plaques, and your extremities to look for clots. Because this treatment is non-invasive and produces images in real time, you are able to receive the results the same day as your appointment. Ultrasound can also be used prior to a mammogram to help detect any abnormalities. Its an ideal alternative for those looking at safer ways to detect medical conditions.

If you are in the Long Beach, CA area, Dr. Preston and Hudavi Wellness are hosting an Ultrasound Event this Friday, February 19, 2016 from 9am to 6pm. Visit us on our website or give us a call at 562-433-2177 to schedule your appointment!
